Abstract

|
Background: Japanese geriatric care system was changed according to the fast aging process, which started in 1970. Review of the meaning and significance in this system change can give some insight to rapid aging challenges in Korea.
Methods: Japanese geriatric care system was reviewed according to the recent publication from Japanese health, labour and welfare ministry.
Results: Japan introduced ‘Long-Term Care Insurance’ for rapid aging process in 2000, and revised it in 2005. In 2008, the ‘Medical Care System for Elderly in the Latter Stage of Life’ for above 75 years old was started, and plan to modify in 2012.
Conclusion: Japanese geriatric care system can be useful reference for rapidly growing elderly care in Korea.
